Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

CBT is a form of psychotherapy ('talking therapy') which does not dwell on the past to gain insight into problems. It looks at how your current thoughts and behaviours are affecting you now. CBT aims to change your thoughts and behaviours so that you can function better.

CBT is different to counseling in that while the CBT therapist will offer support and empathy, the therapy, in contrast to counseling, is more structured and retains focus on the problem. It is also practical in that tasks are often given to be completed at home.

Research studies have shown that a course of CBT can be just as effective as medication in treating depression and certain anxiety disorders by focusing on the thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes that we hold (our cognitive processes) and how this relates to the way we behave.

People are often not fully aware of their thoughts but can learn to identify and report them. If a person is feeling upset in some way, their thoughts are probably negative and often neither realistic nor helpful. Identifying these thoughts is the key to the client understanding and overcoming their difficulties in the process of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

The Kerry Hypnotherapy Clinic provides a tailored programme for the individual needs of each client. In individual cases CBT can be combined with other approaches, particularly towards the end of therapy as a means of future focusing and taking the client to a higher level of functioning.
